Foreign Minister playing the blame game

Israel names prisoners in exchange

Published 16-10-2011 by Ritzau and Reuters on TV2.

The article mentions known details, and in the end brings a quote from the Foreign Minister Villy Søvndal (SF). It reads:

It is really good news, and I’m happy that the deal moreover than the face of it’s content, also can be seen as an important trust-creating step from the Israeli government’s side in regards to the peace process in general”

Seems like he doesn’t dedicate too many thoughts much to those 1000-some victims and 20.000 injured in the Second Intafada. Another possibility is that he simply is not aware of the fact that almost half of the prisoners are terrorists convicted for murder and terrorism – I doubt that possibility though.

Seems like we’re playing the blame game again, Villy.

TV2/Ritzau fails to include vital details in report

Israel wants to build new housing in West Bank

Published on TV2.dk – 27.09.2011

While the report is rather objective overall, it fails completely to elaborate even just shortly on historical facts relevant for the context of the article.

The report states that:

“The new housings will be constructed in the settlement of Gilo, which lies in an area occupied by Israel under the war against a number of Arab countries in 1967.”

And while it is in-fact true that Israel was in war against ‘a number of Arab countries’, the report presents it as Israel was waging the war – something which is known is not true. The Arabs started the war in 1967 and Israel was forced to take the area for security reasons.

More interestingly is the fact that the report completely fails to mention that Gilo will be included in the State of Israel’s sovereign area according to the peace-negotiations for the last 18 years.

Finally the report reports that half a million Jewish settlers live in the West Bank, and that:

“The international community believes, that the West Bank together with Gaza will make up a future Palestinian state.”

Israel also believes that, Ritzau.

Bush accepts ‘Israel-wall’

“Bush says OK to Israel-wall”

Published on TV2 – 26.10.2003

A common misconception is that Israel is building a wall.

“The American president George W. Bush has, according to anonymous diplomatic sources agreed to Israel’s construction of  wall to separate the Israelis and the Palestinians.  So writes the newspaper The Times. The reason is, that Bush does not dare to challenge the powerful Jewish lobby in the US, just a year before the presidential elections. Instead, Bush negotiates with the Israeli prime minister Ariel Sharon, to relieve the implications of the wall for the Palestinians.”

The security barrier that has been constructed (and not completed) consists of 97% fence, and around 3% concrete wall. Concrete is preferred to fence at places where Palestinians have repeatedly shot at Israeli civilian vehicles. Read more about the security fence.

This article not only makes the assumption that the Jewish lobby controls the White House, it alleges that Israel is causing “implications” for [all] Palestinians with a wall. The truth is that it is not a wall, it’s for 97% a fence. Moreover, Israel does not, as the article alleges, have the Palestinians in their hand, controlling them at will. Compared to how weak the public institutions are in the Palestinian Authorities, the Palestinians enjoy a tremendous amount of self-control.

TV2 uses dramatic language and does not adress guilt properly

In the wake of several terror attacks in Israel’s south, Israel killed multiple terrorists in Gaza.

In this article TV2 covers the Israeli attack on Gazan terrorists at the Rafah border crossing, accidentally killing three Egyptian border-guards.

Accompanying dramatic scenes from Gaza, is the caption:

“Other than the three Egyptian border guards, six Palestinians were also killed in the Israeli revenge attack. Among the killed was also a six-year old boy.”

Other than the fact that TV2 fails to address the fact that the Palestinians killed were terrorists, they also uses colorful language by explicitly saying that Israel wanted revenge. The top on the icing is including that a six-year old boy died -  TV2 fails to convey to their readers the urging question of responsibility – why is a combatant endangering a six-year old boy’s life?
